Dr. Terry Shehata

Dr. Terry Shehata has been involved in some capacity over the past 30 years supporting economic development in Maine with a special emphasis on building the state’s science and technology talent infrastructure. Dr. Shehata graduated from Orono High School in 1976 and received his doctorate in Animal Nutrition with specialization in Biochemistry from the University of Maine in 1981. He was the first Maine State Toxicologist from 1982 to 1985. He was the Director of Environmental Health at the New Jersey Department of Health from 1985 to 1988. He returned to Maine in the spring of 1988 to accept the position of Associate Director of the Maine Science and Technology Board and then the Vice President of the Maine Science and Technology Foundation. During his tenure at the Foundation, Dr. Shehata wrote the proposal that lead to a NASA award to the Foundation in 1991 to establish the Maine Space Grant Consortium, an affiliate of a national network of state-based consortia supported by NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. After the Foundation was dechartered by the Maine State Legislature in 2001, Dr. Shehata transformed the Consortium into a 501(3) corporation with full approval from NASA. The Consortium is the only non-profit corporation in the national network of state-based consortia which are housed in universities. He has been the Executive Director of the Consortium since 2001. In addition to his involvement with the Consortium, from 2001 to 2011 Dr. Shehata worked for a small national lean manufacturing and supply chain consulting firm. In 2011 he left the consulting firm and accepted a position at the University of Southern Maine in the Office of Research Administration and Development. Currently, Dr. Shehata is the Senior Policy Associate for Research and Economic Development at the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service. In this capacity he serves as the University’s Economic Development official and coordinates the investment of the Maine Economic Investment Fund in strategic initiatives at the University that support economic development in Maine.
