The Harlow Gallery presents two poetry events during the month of August: James Breslin and Jim Mello will present a selection of their poetry on Friday, August 18 and on Friday, August 25 the Harlow Gallery will host an open mic night. Both events begin at 7pm and are part of The Bookey Readings at the Harlow, a series hosted by the Harlow Gallery at 160 Water Street in Hallowell. The public is invited to attend and experience an evening of spoken word in the setting of an art gallery. A $3 donation is appreciated at the door to benefit programming at the Harlow Gallery.

Jim Breslin

James P. Breslin was born in New York City 1943. He has published in the Lyric, the Aurorean as both contributor and featured poet, Off the Coast, and in the Irish literary magazine the Moth. He has won 1st, 2nd 3rd Prizes in contests sponsored by the Maine Poets Society as well as a number of honorable mentions. He has recently written a book of poems, The Crow and Other Poems published by North Country Press from Unity Maine. Jim has a Masters in Social Work and has worked for the most part with children and adults with mental illness. He lives in Winslow.

Jim Mello
Life moved fast since Jim Mello's previous Moon Pie Press publication, Early Late Bloom (2007). Jim has completed a master's degree in theology, become a grandfather, and written his poetry mostly on the run. Trips to Portugal (the Azores) and Israel expanded his horizons and informed some of his work. He continues to contribute his expertise to the field of addiction while keeping one eye on retirement. He has had poems published in small presses and (the now closed) Bangor Theological Seminary's "The Open Door." His pursuit of the muse is not only through writing, but also in playing music. He has a volunteer gig as a DJ for Colby College radio and identifies with Bob Dylan's words where "... beauty walks a razor's edge, some day I'll make it mine."

For the open mic night on Friday, August 25, doors will open at 6:30pm for poets to ‘sign in’ to read, with sign up ending promptly at 7pm. All poet’s names will be thrown (literally) into a hat, and readers will wait for their name to be selected. Each reader has a maximum of 5 minutes to read, which means they can read 3 short poems of 16 lines each; 2 medium poems of 25-30 lines each; or 1 long poem of 50-60 lines. When your name is called, you’re on! This will be a fun night that gives poets who might not have an opportunity to read their work, to do so in a great venue and in a good spirit of fun and support. Poetry must be appropriate for an all-age audience.
During the readings visitors can also enjoy a solo exhibition of ceramic artworks by Malley Weber which is on view June 30-July 22, 2017.
The Harlow Gallery located in downtown historic Hallowell is home to the Kennebec Valley Art Association, a membership based 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to connecting and celebrating art, artists and community in central Maine since 1963.
