How to Attract and Retain Great Employees

A workshop designed to help small businesses find the right people for their businesses, and how to keep them in this tight labor market.

Presented by Mary Joan Kozicki LaFontaine, Regional Director for the Maine Department of Labor and Bill Card, Economic Development Specialist for the U.S. Small Business Administration, this workshop will provide specifics on how to identify prospective employees, how to make the best hiring decisions for your company, and how to get employees to maximize their value to your firm.

Mary Kozicki LaFontaine, Regional Director of the Southern CareerCenters, has over twenty-five years’ experience in the private and public sectors; prior to her current position, she managed the Lewiston CareerCenter. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a Masters in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine. 

In addition, she teaches at USM-LAC, is President of the Central Maine Human Resources Association and serves on several other civic and business association boards. She recently served on the LA Metro Chamber of Commerce Board including one term as chair, as an Auburn City Councilor for two terms and the Auburn School Committee. 

Bill Card is an Economic Development Specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Maine District Office. He has been with the agency for eight years, developing and presenting small business events for the SBA Maine District Office, and providing business training to small businesses in Maine. Prior to joining the SBA, Bill was a Regional Manager for U.S. Senator Susan M. Collins for 9 years, where he was responsible for creating and facilitating economic development projects in Coastal and Central Maine. Prior to joining Senator Collins’s staff, Bill started and ran his own small business, Title Checks Inc., for 15 years.

Bill is a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and earned his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University in 1999. He lives in Bristol with his wife Jennifer, and their two boys, Liam and Owen.
