Somerville, located in Lincoln County, was incorporated on March 25, 1858 from Patricktown Plantation. The plantation had existed at least since 1813. It is a quiet town with a tradition of community. Many of its residents are descendants of those who settled there in the 1800s.

The Sheepscot River runs through the western portion of the town, and through Somerville Village itself. It widens into Long Pond (once known as Patricktown Pond), on which the town has substantial frontage. Smaller James Pond sits in the northwestern corner.

Although it does not have the dramatic scenery of the coast or mountains, this rural town rather finds its beauty in the ponds, hills, and forests. Miles of dirt roads ensure a slow pace to enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.
