Old Fort Western national historic landmark and living museum will host an Independence Day Celebration Monday, July 4, 2016, from 10:00am until 6:00pm on the east bank of the Kennebec River in the heart of downtown Augusta.

Visitors are invited to walk through the 1754 Fort, Store, House and Tenement to view museum exhibits and talk with historical interpreters about daily life in the 18th century. Music will be provided by the Liberty String Band. A hot dog fundraiser will begin at 10:30am outside the main Fort gates to benefit Old Fort Western’s educational programming. Soda, chips, ice pops, and ice cream will also be on offer.

At 4:00pm the Augusta Parade will begin at the State House and end at the Fort. At 5:30pm, Augusta’s Mayor, David Rollins, will give the traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Fort parade grounds followed by the lowering of the British colors and the raising of the “new” American flag. Afterwards a thirteen-gun cannon salute will be made honoring the original 13 colonies.

At 9:00pm don’t miss the traditional fireworks display at Mill Park!

During the day, regular admission rates apply; however, admission for Augusta residents is always FREE. The Ceremony at 5:30pm is FREE for all. For more information, please visit our website at www.oldfortwestern.org or call 626-2385 or e-mail us at .
