Maine State Museum Joins Smithsonian Magazine’s 11th Annual Museum Day Live!

Free Admission for All Participants with a Downloadable Museum Day Live! Ticket

On Saturday, September 26, 2015, the Maine State Museum in Augusta will open its doors free of charge as part of Smithsonian magazine’s eleventh annual Museum Day Live!  In order to be admitted for free on September 26, participants need only visit the website www.Smithsonian.com/museumday to download a free ticket for two people and present it at the Maine State Museum.  On that day, the museum will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

“Our visitors often think of the Maine State Museum as a kind of mini-Smithsonian,” comments Museum Director Bernard Fishman.  “This is a compliment to both institutions and makes our participation in Museum Day a good fit for the Maine State Museum.  Both museums use objects from nature and culture to enhance understanding and knowledge, and convey the incredible richness and diversity of the many kinds of worlds that surround us.”

Inclusive by design, the event represents the Smithsonian’s commitment to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone.  The event also gives museums across all 50 states the opportunity to offer free admission to all.  Last year’s event drew over 400,000 participants nationally and this year’s event is expected to attract more museum goers than ever before.

The Museum Day Live! ticket is now available to download at www.Smithsonian.com/museumday.

Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only.  One ticket is permitted per household, per e-mail address.  For more information about Museum Day Live! and a list of participating museums and cultural institutions, please visit www.Smithsonian.com/museumday. A link to this site is included on the Maine State Museum’s website, www.mainestatemuseum.org, which contains additional information about the museum’s exhibits and programs.

The Maine State Museum is open Tuesday through Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. Admission is $2 for adults; $1 for senior adults over age 62 and children 6-18 years of age; children under 6 free.  Maximum charge for families is $6.  For more information please call 207-287-2301.
